May 9, 2022
It is with profound sadness that we report the loss of Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester (IACAW), leader, past President, and longtime member Sangita Sudhir Shah on May 9th, 2022, at the age of 74. She passed away peacefully with her two children at her side after a long and complicated hospitalization. Sangita was born on August 11, 1947, in Mahuva, Bhavnagar. She emigrated to the United States in 1970 with her husband Dr. Sudhir Shah, one year after marriage. After her husband's sudden passing in 1990, Sangita accelerated her career as a real estate agent in Westchester County and continued to raise her two children on her own in their home in Irvington, NY. An active contributor to her community, she took on multiple leadership roles within IACAW, including serving as IACAW President, spearheading the foundation of the annual Heritage of India Festival in 2000, co-chairing in Heritage Of India Festival, and serving on other committees in support of IACAW in subsequent years. Sangita is survived by her sister and brother, Savita Shah of Dobbs Ferry, NY and Chandrakant Shah of Desplains, IL, her two children, Samit Shah of Franklin Park, NJ and Sarita Shaevitz of Princeton, NJ, her son-in-law Joshua Shaevitz and two grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
